About the Role

The Volunteer & Engagement Manager oversees My Sister’s Place (MSP) volunteer program and engagement activities. This role supports the stewardship of corporate funders, groups, and individual volunteers by effectively managing MSP’s volunteer initiatives and in-kind contributions. Although MSP operates as a hybrid workplace, this position will require in-person attendance for volunteer events, donation drop-offs, and cultivation needs up to three days a week as needed.

 

About My Sister’s Place

My Sister’s Place is a community of staff, volunteers, and advocates committed to eradicating domestic violence. As DC’s oldest domestic violence shelter, we have served as a cornerstone of the district’s response to this pressing public health issue since 1979. MSP is unique in offering a continuum of care from emergency shelter through transitional-to-permanent housing. Our experienced team of case managers and residential counselors provide clinical counseling, case management, and comprehensive services to empower survivors to recover and thrive. MSP also provides training, case consultation, and advocacy to engage communities to prevent violence and abuse.

 

What You’ll Be Doing

Partner Stewardship, Engagement, & Outreach (40%)

• With oversight from the Senior Director of Development and Communications, design, implement, track, and manage a portfolio of high-value donor groups and corporate partners with volunteer participation. Fulfill partnership deliverables and ensure maximum benefit to both parties.

• Engage staff leadership on the personalized engagement of key donors and partners to ensure their volunteer and charitable gifts are appropriately stewarded.

• Oversee and manage corporate partner volunteer and cultivation events by manning exhibit tables and providing materials and information. As the primary staff contact, attend all volunteer events in person and coordinate with other team members.

• Develop and deliver presentations to internal and/or external stakeholders.

• Conduct corporate community outreach and network with key groups to build an organizational presence in the corporate community.

• Field corporate and group volunteer inquiries and requests and respond promptly (within one business day).

 

Volunteer Management (30%)

• Administer the volunteer database, ensuring that records are accurate, current, and have appropriate notes. This includes data entry, project planning, and scheduling.

• Prepare and present orientation materials for new volunteers.

• Create and distribute information on volunteer policies and procedures.

• Provide general oversight and management of volunteer coordination, maintaining and nurturing volunteer and staff professionalism.

• Field volunteer inquiries and requests and respond promptly (within one business day).

• Write project descriptions for volunteer work, events, and projects.

• Coordinate with the HR team to ensure that volunteers are properly background-checked and that a record of their information and work is kept.

• Select volunteers in coordination with relevant department managers.

• Track volunteer hours.

• Plan and executive volunteer appreciation events in coordination with the Communications team.

 

In Kind Giving Program (30%)

•  Coordinate in-kind donation drives with groups and corporate partners for all MSP priorities (e.g., holiday toy drive, coat drive, back-to-school drive, welcome bags, etc.), incorporating input from program and development staff.

•  Develop a list of businesses that give regular, high-quality in-kind gifts and coordinate drop-offs at storage units, admin, or shelter as appropriate.

•  Obtain all required in-kind gift documentation from donors for receipt purposes and store it in SharePoint and DonorPerfect.

•  Keep records of outreach event attendance and engagement in SharePoint and DonorPerfect.

•  Maintain in-kind gift inventory in the shelter basement and storage units every month.

•  Maintain and update Amazon in-kind Wish Lists.

 

Qualifications

•  Bachelor’s degree and 5–7 years of related volunteer project management and/or development experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

•  Proven track record of building and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders

•  Strong communication skills—comfortable relaying MSP’s mission and impact to partners and the community.

•  High attention to detail.

•  Critical thinking and proactive problem solving—able to provide ideas for streamlining and coordinating across our team and proactively implement work.

•  Ability to learn and maintain systems and databases.

•  Proven ability to work independently and manage competing deadlines.

•  Ability to work effectively with diverse groups and communities.

 

Background Check & Drug Testing Requirements: Employment at My Sister’s Place is contingent upon the successful completion of background checks, including FBI and MPD background checks, TB testing, and a drug test. Additionally, due to grant requirements, employees must maintain updated background checks and screenings as required for their position throughout their employment.
