Carol Loftur-Thun Executive Director As MSP’s Interim Executive Director, Carol brings over 16 years of experience in nonprofit leadership. An entrepreneurial and strategic leader, she is nimble and pragmatic, turning crises into opportunities to create successful turnarounds and transitions. Carol has led efforts to raise over $27 Million for charitable efforts, and served in permanent and interim CEO, COO and Executive Director roles with regional and international nonprofits focused on ending violence, abuse, human trafficking, homelessness, and suicide.
As CEO of The Women’s Center, she secured $100,000 to expand services for sexual assault and domestic violence victims, and collaborated to build a demonstration project funded by the Department of Justice with prosecutors, courts, law enforcement, and other agencies. She also doubled net income from the annual conference, and secured over $400,000 in new funding.
As Interim COO at Free The Slaves, Carol oversaw DC and LA offices, and operations in seven countries, while as Interim Executive Director at Women Empowered Against Violence, she stabilized this agency that had almost closed and executed a move that saved $96,000 a year. Carol began her interim career with SERVE in Manassas, which operated the largest family shelter in Northern Virginia, where she facilitated a historic merger with Northern Virginia Family Services in just three months.
For five years, Carol also served as Executive Director of CrisisLink, which provides the region’s crisis and suicide hotlines, where she doubled call volume and funding. Under her leadership, CrisisLink was named one of Washington, DC’s best-run charities by The Washingtonian and Catalogue for Philanthropy, and was featured on CNN, MSNBC, Kojo Namdi, and in the Washington Post.
A graduate of Davidson College, Carol was born in Quito, Ecuador, and studied in India under the Fulbright Program. Most recently in March, she traveled to South Africa and Namibia to meet with local nonprofit leaders on a fact-finding tour to outline capacity-building needs.
